DStv May Soon Let You Drop Sports Channels as MultiChoice Eyes Shake-Up

DStv Shake-Up: MultiChoice Considers Splitting SuperSport from DStv to Offer Flexible Packages

MultiChoice Group is actively exploring the possibility of separating SuperSport from its DStv offerings, potentially allowing subscribers to pay only for general entertainment and add sports content as an optional bundle.

This move is aimed at reviving declining DStv subscription numbers, which have dropped by 1.2 million over the past year.

The Group’s CEO, Calvo Mawela, confirmed in an interview with TechCentral on Thursday, 12 June, that the review process is underway and expected to conclude by March 2026.

We think that in this financial year we should have a view of which direction to take, and as soon as we have made that, we should be able to update you,” said Mawela.

Only Through MultiChoice: Sport Will Stay Exclusive

Mawela made it clear that while a separation is being explored, any future SuperSport offering will still be exclusively available through MultiChoice platforms. The company sees live sports as a critical factor in customer retention and acquisition.

The idea isn’t to weaken the offering. Any move will have to grow revenue and profits—not the opposite,” Mawela emphasized.

Falling Numbers Spark Urgency

The review comes in response to what MultiChoice described as “unprecedented headwinds,” including fierce competition from global streaming services and shrinking consumer wallets across African markets. These pressures have contributed to a substantial drop in subscribers.

To counter this, MultiChoice has introduced a pilot project that offers weekly DStv bundles in Uganda. If successful, the offering will be rolled out to other countries, including South Africa.

A Step Towards More Flexibility

If implemented, the SuperSport separation would mirror global trends, particularly in markets like the UK where companies such as Sky allow viewers to subscribe to sports separately.

This flexibility could offer cost-conscious consumers more control over their viewing packages, potentially helping MultiChoice regain lost ground in the competitive pay-TV landscape.
