What was supposed to be a spiritual cleansing turned into a horror story for three Chitungwiza women, who say they had to flee from a sangoma’s shrine in Goromonzi—naked and terrified.

The women, Pamela Bako, Shillah Mabvudzi, and a third identified only as Talent, claim they were taken to a mountain by the sangoma, known as Sekuru Sinaro, and given herbs to ingest and bathe with. But things quickly took a dark turn.

Pamela told H-Metro she became suspicious after overhearing two of Sekuru’s male aides speaking in low tones. She says they seemed to be plotting to sexually assault them, and that’s when panic set in.

“Ndinodakutenda vadzimu vangu, tingadai takabatwa chibharo, takazotiza tikamhanya nemusango. We had gone for a cleansing ceremony, but it ended badly after we were given some medicines to bathe, drink and wash our hands with. We questioned the viewing of a mirror in a dark room under the surveillance of two men. Sekuru had driven away, promising to return, and the two wrestled with us, forcing us to remain,” she said.

Pamela, who had her baby with her, said one of the aides even remarked that Sekuru had enough money to cover her rent—something she felt was deeply inappropriate.

“I was with my baby, I kept telling them that I was not going to sleep there. One of the men said Sekuru had enough money to pay for my rentals. They were planning to treat us as their wives overnight, and that is why we ran away in the dark, in different directions, at around 7 pm. I later found my way to the main road, where I managed to get transport to Harare. I arrived in Budiriro at around 11 pm. It was a horrible and frightening experience; I regret consulting that sangoma. Matambudziko anotidariso asi ndakashungurudzika chaizvo ndine mwana mumawoko,” Pamela recounted.

Shillah’s escape led her to the home of Apostle Blessed Mugwambeni, who at first feared she might be a witch. The family had been in prayer against witchcraft and were shocked when a half-naked woman showed up at their door late at night.

“We were about to retire to bed at around 11 pm when we heard her calling for help. She was half-naked and we were quick to suspect her as a witch, since we had prayed against witches with my family. After she narrated her story, we saw it better to lead her to the police after giving her some clothes. Coincidentally, there were no female police officers, and the male officers refused to accommodate her.” said Apostle Blessed.

Shillah said they had wanted to leave the shrine earlier, but Sekuru’s aides wouldn’t let them go.

“We were shocked to see that there were no women at the shrine, and we decided to return. Sekuru’s aides blocked us, and we ran away in different directions, leaving our cellphones. I later found my way to a nearby house where a church family accommodated me. It was my first time to be at a sangoma’s shrine,” Shillah said.

Contacted by H-Metro, Sekuru Sinaro didn’t deny the incident but offered a bizarre explanation. He claimed the women fled because of what they saw in the mirror during the cleansing.

“Vakatiza nekuda kwazvavaiwona mugirazi nekuti vakangavasina kugeza kumeso nemishonga. Two of the three returned the following morning, but the other one did not. The three have been experiencing some sex nightmares,” said Sekuru Sinaro.

According to police, the women later recovered their cellphones from the station.
