Defence Lawyers Poke Holes In Mai Jeremaya’s Testimony Citing Inconsistencies

Defence lawyers are poking holes into Mai Jeremaya’s testimony and are citing inconsistences on her narration of events.

Legal representatives for two men accused of sexually assaulting internet personality Mai Jeremaya have raised serious questions about inconsistencies between her courtroom testimony and previous police statements.

The high-profile case, which has captured national attention, resumed hearings this week with intense cross-examination of the accuser.

Ashley Masendeke, known professionally as Mai Jeremaya, alleges that Thabo Blessing Dube and Martin Charlie sexually assaulted her at a Harare lodge on April 30, 2025. Defence attorneys Shepherd Makonde and George Manokore meticulously examined the variations between her sworn court testimony and three separate accounts she had given to law enforcement.

The defence team particularly scrutinised the existence of a mysterious individual referred to as “Sam,” whom the plaintiff claims initially contacted her before the alleged incident.

“Our evidence suggests this ‘Sam’ character may be entirely fictional,” Makonde asserted during proceedings.

When pressed to provide cellular records or technical evidence linking the accused to the purported “Sam” communications, Masendeke acknowledged she lacked such documentation. The defence maintains this undermines a crucial element of the prosecution’s narrative.

Due to time limitations, the hearing was adjourned until Friday when attorneys plan to examine the substantive allegations in greater detail.

Defence Maintains Consensual Encounter Claim

Both defendants continue to deny all charges, asserting the sexual encounter was consensual and involved financial compensation. Charlie specifically claims Masendeke requested and received a $20 advance payment.
