Bulawayo Father Runs Over, Kills Own Daughter, 2, While Reversing

Bulawayo Horror: Toddler Dies After Dad Accidentally Runs Her Over

A HEART-BREAKING tragedy shook the Kensington community in Bulawayo on Thursday morning when a 55-year-old father accidentally ran over and killed his 2-year-old daughter while reversing out of his yard.

The devastating incident happened on Friday, 20 June 2025 at Hendricourt, Kensington.

Toddler crushed in family yard

According to Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the father was reversing his Toyota Hilux Double Cab when disaster struck.

“The man was reversing out of the yard. As he moved forward, the front left side of the vehicle hit the child and the front wheel ran over her. She died on the spot after sustaining severe head injuries,” said Inspector Msebele.

Police said the tragedy was a result of failure to keep a proper lookout.

“We urge all drivers, especially in residential areas, to thoroughly check around and underneath their vehicles before moving off. Children are small and can easily go unnoticed,” she said.

The toddler’s name has not been released, and investigations are ongoing.

Another crash injures girl, 6, near Mbokodo

In a separate incident just hours later at 3PM, a 6-year-old girl was injured in a head-on collision involving two Toyota Hilux vehicles along Bulawayo-Plumtree Road near Mbokodo Abattoir.

Inspector Msebele said the girl had dashed into the road and stood in the middle of the lane.

“A 53-year-old driver from South Africa, who was heading south, swerved into the opposite lane to avoid hitting the child. Unfortunately, he collided head-on with a vehicle coming from the opposite direction,” she said.

The other driver was a 45-year-old man from Mpopoma. No serious injuries were recorded in either vehicle.

“The minor fell and sustained bruises on the forehead. She was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment,” confirmed Insp Msebele.

Police warn drivers and parents

Following the two incidents, authorities have sounded the alarm.

“We appeal to guardians and parents to always monitor young children, especially when vehicles are in motion. Children should not be left unattended near roads or driveways. Motorists must also be extra vigilant,” said Inspector Msebele.

She added that more awareness was needed in both urban and peri-urban areas to prevent avoidable tragedies like these.
