Phumlani Msibi’s Final Moments Revealed at Memorial Service
The late SuperSport commentator Phumlani Msibi’s final hours were shared during a touching memorial service held on Saturday, 28 June 2025, a week after his passing.
Msibi died on Friday, 20 June 2025, at the age of 57 after a short illness. Known for his legendary line “Coach, thoughts please?” he made history as SuperSport’s first isiZulu-English boxing commentator and became a household name in football broadcasting following the 2007 PSL broadcast deal.

At the memorial, one of his close friends took mourners back to the moment Msibi’s health took a turn for the worse. He recalled getting a distressing phone call from Msibi in the early hours of Tuesday, 17 June — just days before he died.
According to the friend, Msibi had collapsed at home while in the company of his cousin, Mandla. But even in pain, he insisted that he didn’t need an ambulance. The friend recalled:
“He called me on the 17th of June in the early hours of the morning and said, ‘My brother, I have collapsed.’ He was with his cousin Mandla, and he said, ‘Please come and help me.’ I rushed to his house, and indeed, I found his condition was not pleasing at all. As I discussed with Msibi, the possible ways we can deal with the situation, one being I have to call the ambulance, his answer was simple, ‘No, I will be okay.’”

A Life-Saving Decision That Came Too Late
Despite Msibi’s protests, the friend reached out to another mutual friend named Ndu, who was in Amsterdam. The two agreed to override Msibi’s wishes and call for medical help. That decision led to him being admitted to an undisclosed hospital, where he would sadly pass away days later.
“I insisted, and I had a cellphone chat with Ndu in Amsterdam, and we agreed we are not going to take it. I called an ambulance and that’s how Msibi ended up in hospital,” Msibi said.
