Orlando Pirates Legend Calls On Zimbabwe To Adopt South Africa’s Technical Model To Revive Warriors

Former Orlando Pirates captain Edelbert Dinha believes Zimbabwe’s national team needs a more stable, full-time technical department if the Warriors are to close the gap on South Africa and improve their performances.

Dinha argues that the difference is not simply about who occupies the head coach’s position, but the support system around them.

He wants Zimbabwe to adopt a model that keeps national team coaches and specialists closely involved in domestic football throughout the season, rather than relying mainly on international breaks.

Dinha Points To Difference In Technical Setups

Both Zimbabwe and South Africa have recently appointed new head coaches, with Ramon Catala taking charge of the Warriors and Pitso Mosimane leading Bafana Bafana.

However, Dinha says the two teams differ in the amount of time their technical staff can dedicate to national team duties.

Mosimane works with a full-time backroom team that includes assistant coach Morena Ramoreboli, head performance analyst Musi Matlaba, strength and conditioning coach Kabelo Rangoaga and goalkeeper coach Marcus Mashilo.

Zimbabwe’s setup includes Spanish coaches Marc Sanchez and Vicente Girona Izquierdo, as well as local coach Takesure Chiragwi. Chiragwi also coaches CAPS United, while goalkeeper coach Pernell McKop works with South African club Stellenbosch FC.

Dinha believes these competing responsibilities could make it harder for the Warriors’ technical team to monitor players consistently, including Zimbabweans playing abroad.

Speaking to FARPost, he said continuity and regular player assessment had been central to South Africa’s progress under former coach Hugo Broos and now Mosimane.

“What has worked for South Africa from the time of Hugo Broos and now under Pitso Mosimane is continuity and having a full-time technical team. Those coaches are not just waiting for international breaks; they are on the ground, tracking players week in, week out.”

Warriors Urged To Appoint Full-Time Coaches

Dinha believes Zimbabwe should consider employing its national team coaches on a full-time basis so they can scout and assess players throughout the year.

He also questioned how coaches working for clubs outside Zimbabwe could adequately follow the wider pool of players available to the Warriors.

“For us in Zimbabwe, we need to copy that model. You cannot have national team coaches who are also coaching clubs, especially outside of Zimbabwe. How will they have time to scout, track and assess all our players, including those in the diaspora? Ideally, we appoint coaches on a full-time basis.”
