Two South Africans wanted in Zimbabwe following US$600K CBD armed robbery money heist
In a surprising twist, two South African nationals are now wanted in Zimbabwe for their alleged role in a daring armed robbery that saw former Dynamos chairman Rafiq Adam lose over US$600,000 (approx. R11.1 million), a Harare court heard on Monday.
This time, the shoe is on the other foot — as Zimbabweans, often accused of crimes across the Limpopo, now find themselves hosting South African suspects in one of the country’s most high-profile heists this year.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) made the startling revelation during the court appearance of 35-year-old Samson Gora, Adam’s driver, who is accused of tipping off the gang about the money.
Driver accused of leaking inside info
Gora appeared before Harare magistrate Donald Ndirowei charged with armed robbery. He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody until 16 July.
According to the NPA, Gora gave detailed information to a gang consisting of Zimbabweans Nyengerayi Chikwadze alias Chipato, Oscar Muchenje, and two South African nationals whose names are yet to be made public.
“The accused, Samson Gora, provided details about the cash being kept at the premises to his accomplices,” said state prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi.
“The robbery was then executed by four men, including the two foreign nationals not known to Gora.”
The alleged heist took place on 16 June 2025 at Merchantman Enterprises, located at 93 Cameroon Street in Harare’s CBD.
Armed men stormed the office and attacked Adam
According to the prosecution, the gang entered the business premises while Adam sat at the reception. They were armed with a pistol. One of the suspects allegedly hit Adam on the forehead with the weapon.
“They demanded money and took US$500 (approx. R9,300) from him, along with the keys to the office safe,” the court heard.
“Inside the safe was US$600,000 (approx. R11.1 million), which they stole.”
The suspects also ransacked the offices and stole an iPhone 13 Pro Max, a Samsung Fold, and several phones from other employees. Some of the gadgets were later dropped along Leopold Takawira Avenue near the ENBEE store during the getaway.
South Africans split the money, say prosecutors
On 27 June 2025, detectives from CID Homicide Harare arrested Gora after receiving a tip-off. He reportedly confessed during interrogation.
“He admitted to leaking the information and said he received US$10,000 (approx. R185,000) from Chipato,” the NPA told the court.
Gora also claimed that Chipato had only received US$20,000 (approx. R370,000) from Muchenje and the two South African accomplices. Police later recovered US$4,400 (approx. R81,000) in cash and seized three Samsung Note 20 phones, three Samsung Galaxy phones, and a Toyota Hiace allegedly bought from the robbery proceeds.
Gora led officers to his brother, Willard Gora, where part of the loot had been hidden.
Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the two South Africans, flipping the usual narrative that sees Zimbabweans accused of committing crimes in South Africa.
