Former Minister Walter Mzembi Challenges Court On Bail Ruling

Former Minister Walter Mzembi has challenged the court’s previous bail ruling, which led to his being held in remand awaiting trial.

Walter Mzembi, Zimbabwe’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, has initiated fresh legal proceedings to contest his current remand status. The prominent politician appeared briefly before Harare Magistrate Donald Ndirowei today, with the case postponed to July 9 for a decisive ruling on his application.

Mzembi’s defence counsel, Killian Mandiki, is preparing comprehensive written arguments for submission before the prosecution presents its counterarguments. This follows last month’s controversial revocation of Mzembi’s bail privileges by the Harare court.

Walter Mzembi’s Controversial Bail Revocation

The court previously rejected Mzembi’s request to cancel outstanding arrest warrants, ruling that the former minister had failed to comply with reporting conditions when given the opportunity. Mandiki maintained his client’s absence wasn’t deliberate, citing serious health complications that required extended hospitalisation.

The defence showed proof of the accused’s medical conditions in court and a doctor’s note for treatment which happened overseas.

Mzembi asserted he suffered from a potentially life-threatening medical condition that kept him hospitalised for an extended period. The politician claimed he only returned when his health showed significant improvement. However, judicial authorities concluded his medical condition didn’t prevent court attendance. They even shared that the politician was working during the election campaigns when he was supposedly sick.

Political Connections Cited in Ruling

The bail revocation decision also referenced Mzembi’s political activities as campaign manager for exiled former Minister Saviour Kasukuwere. This connection appears to have influenced the court’s stringent position regarding the bail conditions.

Legal observers anticipate heightened interest in the July 9 ruling, which could set important precedents for similar high-profile cases in Zimbabwe’s judicial system.
