ZANU-PF Harare Targets Chiwenga Ally in New Strategy to Sneak Tagwirei Into Central Committee
After a dramatic setback that saw businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei booted from a ZANU-PF central committee meeting on Thursday, 3 July 2025, the party’s Harare provincial leadership is now working behind the scenes to get him back in, this time, with a new game plan.
Tagwirei had hoped to be formally co-opted into the party’s influential central committee, backed by a recommendation from the Harare province. But things didn’t go his way. Instead of receiving a warm welcome, he was asked to leave the meeting after it was made clear that he hadn’t been officially endorsed by the party’s top leadership.
Zanu-PF Harare Plots New Strategy to Sneak Tagwirei into Central Committee
Now, ZANU-PF Harare province is preparing to regroup. According to The Standard, the provincial executive is meeting on Sunday, 6 July at Batanai Primary School in Epworth to craft a fresh strategy to secure Tagwirei’s place at the high table.
One insider revealed the plan:
“The plan is now to create a vacancy in to the Harare top six and appoint Tagwirei so that he can now be seconded to the CC.”
In other words, they want to make space for him by pushing someone else out.

Zanu-PF Harare to Oust Chiwenga Ally
That “someone else” appears to be George Chimhini, the province’s current secretary for finance. According to the report, provincial chair Goodwills Masimirembwa and his allies are preparing to oust Chimhini to make way for Tagwirei.
But there’s more to this than just party administration. Chimhini is reportedly related to Sports Minister Anselem Sanyatwe, an ally of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. This has raised speculation that the move is also part of the broader ZANU-PF succession battle between those backing Chiwenga and those seen as aligning with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Meanwhile, Tagwirei has publicly denied rumours that he’s being positioned to take over from Mnangagwa. Despite swirling speculation, he insists he has no ambition to challenge Chiwenga or anyone else for the presidency.
