Mercedes-Benz Recalls 102 Cars In South Africa Over Critical Steering Fault

Mercedes-Benz South Africa has been forced to issue urgent safety recalls for over one hundred of its high-end vehicles. The action, which affects 102 cars across two model lines, comes after the identification of a critical fault in the steering mechanism that could have severe consequences for drivers.

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) formally announced the recall, confirming that the initiative affects 98 GLC-254 models and an additional four EQE-295 models. These vehicles were all sold to South African customers between 2022 and 2025, meaning many are relatively new and still on the roads today.

The heart of the problem lies within the vehicle’s steering coupling. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, the bolting in this crucial component may not have been executed to the correct standard. This manufacturing defect poses a significant risk that worsens over time.

The NCC’s statement elaborated on the potential danger, stating: “In this case, the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and steering rack might loosen over time. As a result of the defect, this might lead to a loss of the vehicle’s steerability, increasing the risk of an accident.” Essentially, the link between the driver’s input at the steering wheel and the car’s wheels could fail, resulting in a complete loss of control.

What Owners Must Do Now

Mercedes-Benz South Africa is advising all owners of the affected models to take action without delay. The company has advised that they must contact their nearest authorised Mercedes-Benz dealership to arrange for an immediate inspection. The necessary repair, which will involve either rectifying or replacing the faulty steering coupling, will be performed at no additional charge.

The commission used the announcement to reinforce the importance of such safety campaigns. It reminded the public that product recalls are a vital instrument for consumer protection and urged all those affected to respond promptly to the call. The NCC also confirmed that it is “monitoring all ongoing recalls under the Consumer Protection Act” to ensure compliance and public safety.
