‘Delayed and erratic start’: Checkout Zimbabwe’s 2025/26 rainfall forecast

The Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe (MSD) has issued its 2025–2026 Seasonal Rainfall Forecast. The forecast shows a shaky start to the rainy season before conditions improve later.

OCTOBER – NOVEMBER – DECEMBER 2025

The season will start with delayed and erratic rainfall, especially in October and November. Northern provinces face below-normal rainfall, raising concerns about dry spells. Meanwhile, southern and western areas may enjoy normal to above-normal rains. Temperatures will rise above average in October and November, then cool in December.

Improving Conditions in December

By December, rainfall is expected to strengthen across most regions. Normal to above-normal rains will bring relief to farmers. Southern provinces could even experience above-normal rainfall, boosting agriculture. These improved conditions mark a crucial turning point in the season.

JANUARY – MARCH 2026

Rainfall patterns will remain uneven. Northern provinces may still endure below-normal rains, threatening crops and water supplies. In contrast, central, southern, and western regions are likely to benefit from normal to above-normal rains, supporting stronger harvests.

Implications for Farmers and Communities

The MSD stresses that late onset and erratic rains will challenge farming. Farmers should use climate-smart practices and drought-tolerant crops. They must also take advantage of expected rainfall peaks from December. Communities in the north should prepare for possible dry spells. However, southern and western regions have better chances of a productive season if rains arrive as predicted.
