The political party ActionSA has launched a scathing attack against the Department of Home Affairs, following an announcement of the Zimbabwe Exemption Permits will be extended for a further period. The party has condemned the move as a profound failure of leadership that will exacerbate the nation’s immigration challenges.
In a strongly worded statement, ActionSA’s parliamentary chief whip, Lerato Ngobeni MP, expressed deep frustration with the administration. She articulated that the continuous reliance on temporary solutions is damaging the fabric of the nation’s immigration system.
“The ongoing pattern of temporary measures has eroded public confidence, undermined border integrity, and perpetuated inequality between citizens and foreign nationals,” Ngobeni stated.
She emphasised that the party’s stance is not without compassion, but is rooted in a desire for order and legality.
“South Africa does not need endless extensions. We need decisive leadership, firm timelines, and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law.”

ActionSA Blasts Government Over Zimbabwe Exemption Permits Extension
The extension, allowing the ZEP programme to continue until the end of May 2027, was justified by Minister Dr Leon Schreiber on the grounds that consultations with the Immigration Advisory Board are still in progress. However, ActionSA has dismissed this explanation as insufficient and unhelpful to citizens demanding concrete action.
Ngobeni argued that the minister’s reasoning offers little solace to a public growing increasingly impatient.
“The minister’s justification that consultations with the Immigration Advisory Board were still ongoing offers no comfort to South Africans who have waited years for decisive action,” she said.
She further warned of the tangible consequences of this perceived dithering, adding,
“Every further delay deepens social tensions, weakens accountability, and tells law-abiding South Africans that their government lacks the political courage to lead.”

The party is now demanding that the minister publicly release a detailed and time-bound strategy to resolve the permit issue once and for all. This plan must include definitive deadlines for concluding the consultation process and for implementing the necessary immigration reforms.
