Social Media Star Josephine Mutongi Faces Fraud And Incitement Charges

Prominent social media figure Josephine Mutongi finds herself in handcuffs, accused of fraud and incitement charges. The allegations centre on a substantial sum of money, over US$1,000, which was intended to aid a family struck by tragedy.

National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the arrest, stating that the investigation into the matter is actively progressing. The case has cast a shadow over community-led support efforts following the heartbreaking incident in Kuwadzana Extension.

Commissioner Nyathi elaborated on the serious nature of the charges, which extend beyond a simple financial dispute.

“She failed to surrender part of the funeral contributions deposited into her personal account,” he stated, outlining the core of the fraud allegation.

The police spokesperson further revealed that Mutongi is facing multiple charges, including fraud and inciting public demonstrations. This suggests a complex case that intertwines financial misconduct with alleged attempts to mobilise public sentiment.

Further complicating the scandal are unconfirmed reports of a confrontation between Mutongi and a Kuwadzana Extension family. It is claimed that the family was taken aback upon discovering that Josephine had provided their address as her own without permission. A source close to the family suggested this was a tactical move, saying,

“They were shocked. It seems she was using their location to throw authorities off her scent, seemingly to avoid arrest.”

This alleged deception has added a layer of personal violation to the ongoing legal proceedings.

Anymore Muzanago, the father of the two children whose tragic discovery prompted the original fundraising, has been offered a beacon of hope. Taurai Mauka, a member of the ruling party, along with his wife, personally presented Muzanago with the deed to a 300-square-meter residential stand in Kuwadzana 5.

This generous act directly addresses the family’s expressed need to relocate from their current home, where the memory of their loss is an ever-present agony. Muzanago had previously indicated that the sight of the car where his children were found was profoundly traumatising for the entire family.
