Zimbabwe Tightens Road Rules: Heavy Fines for Overloaded Trucks on Major Highways
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has issued a strong warning to motorists and transport operators against overloading.
It described the practice as one of the main causes of road damage across the country.
Heavy Fines for Offenders
In a public statement titled “Strict Enforcement of Axle Load Regulations on Major Highways,” the Ministry said there will be zero tolerance for overloaded vehicles, especially on major roads such as the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Highway.
“Any truck found to be overloaded on the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road, or any other major highway, will be subject to severe penalties and fines as prescribed by the country’s laws,” the statement read.

The ministry emphasized that the move aims to protect the government’s ongoing infrastructure investments, including key projects such as the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road Rehabilitation and Upgrading Project.
Nationwide Enforcement Initiative
According to the statement, enforcement will not be limited to a specific region but will cover all major highways across Zimbabwe.
“This enforcement applies to all major highways across Zimbabwe to preserve the national road network. Regular checkpoints and weighbridges will be operational to ensure adherence,” the ministry said.
Overloading Threatens Road Safety and Public Funds
The Ministry highlighted that overloading is a major contributor to road deterioration, leading to premature potholes, structural failures, and increased public expenditure on repairs.
“Overloading severely damages road surfaces and poses a serious safety risk to all road users. We urge all transport operators and drivers to comply with stipulated axle load limits,” the Ministry noted.
Protecting Zimbabwe’s Infrastructure
The Ministry called on all road users to work together to safeguard the nation’s transport infrastructure, stressing that the long-term goal is a safer and more connected Zimbabwe.
“Let us work together to protect our national infrastructure for a safer, more connected Zimbabwe,” the statement concluded.
