The Gauteng Education Department says it has to await confirmation of the suspected Mpox case from the National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD ) and Department of Health (DOH).
Gauteng Education Spokesperson, Steve Mabona says the department issued a preliminary statement earlier today citing that a Grade 1 girl learner from the Iketleng Primary School in Hammanskraal is believed to have contracted the deadly virus.
It’s alleged that she visited relatives over the weekend who had displayed symptoms of the virus. The child was taken to the hospital earlier this week and diagnosed with Mpox.
The Department says the initial statement was based on the official correspondence they received from the school. Mabona apologised for the advisory without awaiting the final verification from the NICD.
“The GDE is committed to ensuring accurate and verified information is communicated to the public. We are now awaiting the official verification from the NICD and will defer to the Department of Health for any further announcements on this matter.
