A two-month-old baby girl was brazenly snatched from her young sister’s lap in broad daylight in Gweru CBD. The shocking abduction has sent ripples of fear through the community and prompted an urgent police appeal for information.
The Midlands province police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the distressing details of the case, which unfolded in the afternoon. According to police, the mother, 26-year-old Faith Jakaza, had just finished breastfeeding her infant daughter and made the fateful decision to step away for a moment.

The mother’s simple, everyday errand was to take only a few minutes, but the outcome was utterly devastating. Upon turning back to her children, she was met with a sight of pure horror.
“On turning back, after a few minutes, the mother discovered the elder daughter no longer had the baby, saying the baby had been snatched away,” Inspector Mahoko recounted.
The six-year-old sister, undoubtedly terrified and confused, was the only witness to the sudden and terrifying disappearance of her baby sister. The immediate aftermath was one of panic and desperate action as the reality of the situation set in for the young mother.
In the frantic moments following the discovery, Faith Jakaza is said to have screamed for help, alerting passers-by as she began a desperate search for her missing child. Her cries echoed through the CBD, a raw expression of a tragedy unfolding in broad daylight. The police were quickly alerted, and an investigation is now underway to locate the infant and apprehend the individual responsible for this heartless act.
Inspector Mahoko made a direct appeal to the public for assistance, emphasising the critical need for any piece of information, no matter how small it may seem.
“We appeal for any information that can help in locating the culprit and recover the baby,” he said.
The use of the word “recover” underscores the urgency with which authorities are treating the case, as they work against the clock to bring the infant home safely.

A Stark Warning to Parents and Guardians
In light of this traumatic event, the Midlands police have issued a stern reminder to all caregivers about the ever-present need for vigilance. The spokesperson concluded with a sobering piece of advice aimed at preventing a repeat of such a harrowing incident.
“On the same note we also advise mothers or persons who have the custody of babies and children to always keep them under close monitoring,” said Insp Mahoko.
The community of Gweru is now left hoping for the safe return of the baby girl, while also grappling with the unsettling knowledge that such a brazen abduction could occur in their midst. The police investigation continues.
