Venezuela presidential race heats up as candidates close campaigns

Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez wrapped up his presidential campaign in Caracas on Thursday in the company of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado ahead of this Sunday’s presidential election. Gonzalez and Machado toured eastern Caracas on top of a vehicle and were surrounded by hundreds of cheering supporters.

The candidate and the opposition leader urged voters to go to polling stations early and stay all day after casting their vote, said Venezuelans would be witness to change on Sunday.

Gonzalez, 74, a former diplomat, is known for his calm demeanour and promises that change could bring home many migrants. Machado, who is banned from public office, is backing presidential hopeful Gonzalez.

The diplomat will face the incumbent president and ruling party’s presidential candidate, Nicolas Maduro.

In the July 28 elections, Maduro will seek a third consecutive six-year term, while nine candidates will try to oust Chavismo – the brand of government installed by Maduro’s socialist predecessor, Hugo Chavez who has been in power since 1999 and accused of campaign advantage-taking.
