Responding to the criticism, Tiffany Haddish defended herself over the way she reacted. She reflected on her American upbringing, where she was repeatedly exposed to grim images and narratives about Africa—such as starving children with flies, pervasive violence, and constant conflict.
These portrayals created a deeply ingrained fear and misunderstanding about the continent. Haddish also mentioned that despite her own curiosity and desire to explore Africa, she faced reluctance from her Black friends who expressed their fear about visiting Africa.
“I am an American a Black one at that and Told for years that people are starving in Africa, showed pictures of babies with flies on them. Told crazy stories of how they kill each other and there is war everyday there. I asked my black friends to go with me and they were scared.”
Haddish Reflects on Misconceptions About Africa After Social Media Criticism
Tiffany Haddish stated that her visit to Africa brought her to tears as she discovered the truth about the continent.
She emphasized that the reality she encountered starkly contrasts with the often misleading portrayals by the media
She pointed out that the media often portrays Africa inaccurately, leading many in the USA to believe that Africans lack resources and opportunities
“We got here and I have been eyes full of tears finding out the truth. The media be lying. I thought I would share cause I know people in the USA that believe Africans don’t have anything.”

Haddish Clears Up Food Misconceptions After Social Media Question
A follower on TikTok quizzed her where she thought Zimbabweans and people in Africa got their food from.
“did you think we ate grass?”
Responding to the follower, Tiffany asserted that;
“No. But the media had me thinking all of your foods are purchased in out door markets with goats and cows just hanging out waiting to be slaughtered. With all kinds of smells and flies everywhere.”
