Breakup Sparks Cyberbullying, Victim Forced to Delete Posts Multiple Times

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the incident occurred following the breakdown of Tengende’s relationship with his 29-year-old ex-girlfriend. After a misunderstanding on 2 February 2026, the couple separated.

Tengende withdrew a cellphone he had previously given the victim, failing to allow her to log out of her Facebook and TikTok accounts. Two days later, on 4 February 2026, he accessed her accounts and posted an obscene audio message to over 3,500 followers, with the aim of humiliating her.

Despite the victim repeatedly deleting the post, Tengende reposted the audio several times, forcing her to remove it four times before reporting the matter to the police, which led to his arrest.

Court Sentence

Tengende pleaded guilty to the charges. Bindura Magistrates’ Court sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment, of which 4 months were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence. A further 8 months were suspended provided he completes 280 hours of community service.

Legal and Social Implications

The court emphasized that social media must not be weaponized to harass, humiliate, or degrade others. Digital platforms are not lawless spaces, and those who use technology to settle personal disputes will face legal consequences.

“Social media must not be weaponised to humiliate, harass or degrade others. Digital platforms are not lawless spaces. Those who abuse technology to settle personal scores will face the consequences of the law,” NPAZ said in a statement.

Authorities said the sentence will serve as a warning against abusing online platforms to target individuals, stressing the importance of responsible digital conduct.
