A Bulawayo provincial magistrate jailed for criminal abuse of office has secured bail pending appeal.
Evia Matura, 47, had already started serving an effective 18-month prison sentence. However, she won release on Monday after the state supported her application.
Bongani Ndlovu granted her US$300 bail through the Bulawayo High Court.
Conviction and Bail Conditions
Matura worked at the Tredgold Buildings Magistrates Court in Bulawayo during the offence period. Authorities convicted her after she ordered a remand prisoner’s release on bail.
She made the order without a High Court directive or a formal application. The application also lacked any cited change of circumstances.
Meanwhile, Matura approached the High Court while pursuing her appeal process. Her legal team is led by Advocate Tazorora Musarurwa.
Under her bail conditions, Matura must remain at her Killarney home in Bulawayo. She must also surrender her passport to the Assistant Registrar of the High Court.
In addition, she must report twice each month to Bulawayo Central Police Station. She will report on Fridays between 6 am and 6 pm.
