Calls Grow to Cancel Mafikizolo’s Zimbabwe Concert Amid Xenophobia Tensions
Calls are growing for South African Afro-pop duo Mafikizolo’s upcoming performance in Zimbabwe to be cancelled, with some Zimbabweans arguing that the concert comes at a time of heightened tensions affecting their compatriots living in South Africa.
The award-winning group is scheduled to headline the Econet Buddie Beatz concert in Victoria Falls on July 5, but the announcement has ignited debate on social media, with critics urging organisers to reconsider hosting the South African act.

Public Backlash
Some Zimbabweans have called for a boycott or outright cancellation of the event, saying it would be inappropriate to host South African performers while many Zimbabweans in South Africa are facing uncertainty amid rising anti-immigrant sentiment.
The calls come as concerns over xenophobia and immigration have dominated public discourse following recent developments across the border.
Critics argue that proceeding with the concert would send the wrong message at a time when some Zimbabweans believe greater solidarity with affected migrants is needed.
Others Defend the Performance
Despite the backlash, others have defended the concert, insisting that music should not become a casualty of political or social disputes.
Supporters of the event argue that cultural exchange helps strengthen relations between neighbouring countries and that artists should not be held responsible for political developments beyond their control.
They say cancelling the show could undermine efforts to promote unity through entertainment and the arts.
Concert Still Scheduled
As debate continues online, Mafikizolo remains scheduled to headline the Econet Buddie Beatz concert in Victoria Falls on July 5.
Neither the organisers nor the South African duo have publicly indicated that the performance will be cancelled.
The controversy has, however, highlighted the deep emotions surrounding the treatment of Zimbabwean migrants in South Africa and the challenge of balancing cultural engagement with public sentiment during periods of regional tension.
