Catholic nun abducted during Zimbabwe’s liberation war marks 60 years in convent

Sr. De Cora Bere (LCBL), once abducted during Zimbabwe’s liberation war, marked 60 years in religious life. She joined other Sisters of the Little Children of Our Blessed Lady (LCBL) in celebration.

Families, friends, and the faithful gathered at Regina Mundi Primary School on 25 April 2026. They celebrated twelve Sisters marking 25, 50, and 60 years in the convent. Joy, song, and thanksgiving filled the atmosphere throughout the day.

Robert Christopher Ndlovu led the Eucharistic celebration. Priests, religious members, and lay faithful attended from across the Archdiocese of Harare. Meanwhile, the choir lifted hearts with melodious hymns and vibrant praise.

Milestones of Faith and Commitment

Sr. Christine Ganda and Sr. Regina Kunze marked 25 years of service. Sr. Maggie Mutopo, Sr. Eugenia Sanyika, Sr. Evangelista Ruocha, and Sr. Romana Makwindi celebrated 50 years.

Six Sisters reached the rare 60-year diamond jubilee milestone. These included Sr. de Angelis Chari, Sr. Rosaria Chidemo, and Sr. de Cora Bere.

Notably, five jubilarians came from Mount St. Mary’s Parish in Wedza. Their community celebrated with song, ululation, and deep gratitude. This strong presence highlighted the parish’s enduring faith and vocations.

Sr. Bere’s Journey of Faith and Resilience

After Mass, Sr. Bere expressed her overwhelming joy. “I am very happy, and I can’t really describe the joy inside me,” she said. “I was not expecting that I could reach this far.”

She then recalled her experience during the liberation war in 1978. She was taken from Mary Mount Mission and marched to Mozambique on foot.
“That experience strengthened me to be what I am today,” she shared. “God was with us through it all.”

Furthermore, she offered advice to young people discerning their path. “The first choice is the best. I can’t regret being a nun.”

A Call to Renewal and Perseverance

During the homily, Fr. Fanuel Magwidi OFM reflected on the meaning of jubilee. “Jubilee is a time of grace,” he said. “It is an opportunity to receive God’s forgiveness and to forgive others.”

He emphasized that jubilee signals renewal, not completion. He referenced St. Paul’s message about perseverance and faith. “Celebrating 25, 50, or 60 years does not mean the race is over.” “It is a call to remain faithful and trust in God’s grace.”

Finally, the Sisters renewed their vows before the congregation. Their lives reflected fidelity, sacrifice, and enduring joy.
The Church gave thanks for their lifelong commitment and faithful “yes.”
