Cheeky Thief Steals ZRP Officer’s Car Parked At Bulawayo Central Police Station

Thief Steals Police Officer’s Honda Fit Outside Station

In a stunning turn of events, a cheeky thief managed to steal a police officer’s car from the parking area of Bulawayo Central Police Station. The brazen theft occurred while the police officer was on duty, sparking a dramatic investigation, a swift arrest, and an unexpected escape from lawful custody by the accused man.

Daring Heist At The Heart Of Law Enforcement

According to the Chronicle, the incident began on 31 October 2025. Constable Mashora parked his Honda Fit in the central parking bay outside Bulawayo Central Police Station, locked it, and reported for duty.

Prosecutor Tsungirai Mutapi outlined what happened later that evening. Introducing the evidence, he told the court:

“At around 6.30PM, the accused went to the complainant’s vehicle and used an unknown object to open the car and start the engine before driving off.”

Inside the vehicle were the officer’s personal items, including a T-shirt, black belt, sandals, and a satchel.

When Constable Mashora completed his shift, he discovered the parking space empty and immediately reported the matter. He later hired a vehicle to search for his missing car the following day.

A Dramatic Arrest And An Audacious Escape

Detectives from the Vehicle Theft Squad launched an investigation that led them to the suspect, Talent Mpofu (27) of Entumbane. He was arrested at his home and later directed the detectives to Total Service Station near Western Commonage Police Station, where the Honda Fit had been abandoned.

However, the drama intensified upon his return to Bulawayo Central Police Station.

Mr Mutapi told the court:

“Mpofu allegedly escaped from the police courtyard despite being handcuffed. He fled to his home. Upon arrival, his wife, with the help of a neighbour, unlocked the handcuffs. Mpofu then hid in the bedroom. Detectives followed him and found him hiding under the bed.”

Court Appearance And Defence

Constable Mashora added further details when he testified. He revealed that his Honda Fit was recovered with different number plates. He also confirmed that Mpofu was wearing his T-shirt and sandals when he was taken into custody.

Mpofu appeared before regional magistrate Sibonginkosi Maphosa on 7 November 2025, facing charges of:

  • motor vehicle theft
  • driving without a valid licence
  • escaping from lawful custody

He was remanded in custody, with the trial expected to continue on 11 November 2025.

In his defence, Mpofu claimed financial hardship drove him to commit the crime.
