Government is bringing justice closer to residents by building a new magistrates’ court in Cowdray Park, Bulawayo.
The suburb houses more than 70 000 people and remains one of the city’s largest communities.
Therefore, the new facility should reduce travel costs and shorten journeys for residents seeking legal services.
The project also supports the Second Republic’s drive to decentralise essential public services across Zimbabwe.
New court brings justice closer
Chief Justice Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza said the development demonstrates Government’s determination to expand access to justice.
“We are committed to ensuring everyone has access to the courts. This suburb has a population of over 70 000 people. Imagine the relief that this facility will bring to this community. As Government says, leaving no one and no place behind, as the justice sector we are committed to ensuring that becomes a reality.”
Meanwhile, construction teams continue working towards the project’s targeted completion date in March next year.
Project Architect in the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, Kudakwashe Khutshwayo, outlined the project’s progress.
“This is a 12-month contract. We resumed work around March this year and now have a new contractor. The project is 43 percent complete, and the contractor is working flat out to finish the superstructure by March next year.”
Residents welcome easier court access
Residents have welcomed the development, particularly because it could help vulnerable community members.
Cowdray Park resident Gogo Edelini Mudini said the new court would remove the burden of travelling long distances.
“We are happy that at last Government is building a magistrates’ court for us. It will make it easier to follow up on our cases. Because of the distance to West Commonage Court, many people end up giving up, and criminals walk away scot-free.”
Another resident also praised the project and its focus on improving public services.
“The Second Republic is a people-centred Government. We really appreciate the work it is doing to bring the courts closer to people.”
The Cowdray Park court forms part of Government’s wider devolution programme.
The initiative seeks to improve access to essential services across rapidly growing communities in Bulawayo.
