Cyril Ramaphosa Extends Condolences To Zimbabwe After Deadly Lake Kariba Ferry Accident

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his condolences to Zimbabwe following the tragic loss of lives in the Lake Kariba passenger ferry accident.

The tragedy has claimed 44 lives, with search and recovery efforts continuing as authorities work to locate those still missing.

Ramaphosa Stands With Zimbabwe

In a statement issued by the Presidency of South Africa, Ramaphosa conveyed his sympathy to the victims’ families and the people of Zimbabwe.

He said South Africa was standing alongside its neighbour during a difficult period of mourning.

As South Africans we stand in solidarity today with the nation of Zimbabwe as we mourn this extensive loss of life,” Ramaphosa said.

His message comes as Zimbabwean authorities continue recovery operations following Monday’s accident.

President Mnangagwa Declares National Disaster

Meanwhile, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the Lake Kariba ferry accident a National Disaster.

In a statement shared on X, President Mnangagwa said he was deeply saddened by the incident, which claimed the lives of 44 Zimbabweans.

He extended condolences to the affected families on behalf of the Government and the nation.

The President said authorities had been deployed to provide medical assistance and support to victims, survivors and bereaved families.

Government Orders Maritime Safety Review

President Mnangagwa also ordered an immediate review of Zimbabwe’s maritime safety capabilities.

He directed maritime safety agencies and security forces to identify and address weaknesses exposed by the tragedy.

The President said the Government must ensure that Zimbabwe’s waters are safe for those who depend on them.

He also praised emergency responders for acting quickly and helping save lives after the accident.

Search And Recovery Operations Continue

Search and recovery teams are expected to continue their work as authorities try to account for everyone who was aboard the vessel.

The operation remains focused on recovering victims and supporting survivors of the disaster.

President Mnangagwa called on Zimbabweans to pray for those who lost their lives.
