Explosives were used to attack a bus in Chipinge at about 3am on August 21, 2026, while the driver and conductor were sleeping inside, leaving the vehicle badly damaged and prompting a police investigation.

The bus was parked at Chinheya Business Centre when the attack happened.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that police are investigating a case of attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
“A person went to the bus and threw a detonator on the rear wheels. The bus driver and conductor were sleeping inside at the back.”
The blast damaged the rear section of the bus, including the right rear tyre and axle. The driver and conductor managed to escape unharmed.
The Herald reported that the explosives attack happened amid growing competition between bus operators fighting for passengers on lucrative routes from Chipinge.
Police Probe Attack Amid Bus Route Rivalry
Police had not made any arrests by August 25, 2026. Nyathi said investigators were working to establish the motive behind the attack.
Residents said the explosion was heard across parts of Chipinge.
Some commuters have raised concerns about increasing confrontations between transport operators and touts. They fear that continued violence could eventually put passengers at risk.
Police have not publicly identified the person responsible for the attack or confirmed who may have been behind it.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to establish who carried out the attack and why the bus was targeted.
