Police in Masvingo are searching for a haulage driver who allegedly abandoned his truck after fleeing a roadblock.
Dzikamai Chimunda, 48, reportedly disappeared after detectives stopped his vehicle near Exor earlier this month.
Police had reportedly received information that Chimunda was transporting illegal drugs. Consequently, detectives intercepted his truck around midnight.
Driver allegedly flees police roadblock
Chimunda was driving a Freightliner truck belonging to Bindura Haulage. The vehicle carried registration number AEG 5856 and two trailers.
Detectives allegedly instructed him to stop before requesting permission to search the vehicle.
However, Chimunda reportedly accelerated away from the officers. He later slowed down before allegedly jumping from the moving truck.
The driver then vanished into nearby bushes, leaving detectives to bring the vehicle under control.
Police reportedly stopped the truck before it collided with other road users. Meanwhile, Chimunda managed to escape.
Authorities have since launched a search for the missing driver following the incident.
Employer reportedly receives resignation call
According to the Masvingo Mirror, Chimunda contacted his employers the following morning.
He allegedly informed them that he was resigning from his position. He also reportedly admitted abandoning the truck in Masvingo.
Police subsequently searched the vehicle and discovered several suspected drugs inside.
“A search was conducted into the vehicle leading to the recovery of 370 x 100ml bottles of Broncleer cough syrup, 120 x 100ml bottles of Astra cough syrup and approximately 20kg of dagga,” police said.
The recovered substances reportedly have a combined street value exceeding US$5,000.
Police continue searching for Chimunda as investigations into the alleged drug haul continue.
