Ex-French President Sarkozy Released From Prison After Serving Just Three Weeks of Five-Year Jail Term

Nicolas Sarkozy Freed From Prison After Just Three Weeks

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been released from prison after serving only three weeks of a five-year jail term. The Paris Court of Appeal granted his release on strict judicial supervision pending an appeal trial scheduled for next year. The ex-leader was convicted on 21 October for his role in a criminal conspiracy to finance his 2007 presidential campaign with funds from late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

A Dramatic Afternoon And A Return Home

The events unfolded rapidly on Monday afternoon. Less than ninety minutes after the court’s decision, Sarkozy’s car was seen departing the notorious La Santé prison in Paris. He arrived at his home in the city’s affluent western districts just over an hour later. The speed of his release marked a dramatic shift in fortune for the 70-year-old, who had been held in a solitary confinement cell. Following his release, Sarkozy took to social media to declare his ongoing fight. He wrote:

“My energy is focused solely on the single goal of proving my innocence. The truth will prevail… The end of the story is yet to be written.”

Sarkozy’s “Gruelling” Prison Ordeal

Speaking to the Paris court via video link just hours before his release, Sarkozy gave a stark account of his brief time behind bars. He described the experience as a “nightmare” and emotionally taxing. He maintained his absolute innocence regarding the central charges, telling the court:

“I never had the mad idea of asking Gaddafi for money. I will never admit to something I haven’t done.”

Despite the difficult conditions, the former president paid tribute to the prison staff, stating they had shown “exceptional humanity” and made his incarceration “bearable.” According to reports, his cell in the isolation wing contained basic amenities, including a small television for which he paid a monthly fee of €14 (approx. R280), a small hob, and a fridge. His daily routine was limited, with just one hour of solitary exercise permitted.

The Legal Road Ahead And A Minister’s Controversial Visit

The release is not the end of the legal battle. Christophe Ingrain, one of Sarkozy’s lawyers, called the decision “a step forward” but confirmed the focus is now squarely on the appeal trial, expected in March. The conditions of his release are stringent; he is barred from leaving France and is forbidden from contacting any other witnesses in the “Libyan dossier” case or any employees of the justice ministry. His brief incarceration was not without controversy. A visit from the current Justice Minister, Gérald Darmanin, a former colleague, prompted thirty French lawyers to file a complaint, alleging a conflict of interest. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez also revealed that two bodyguards were stationed in nearby cells due to an “obvious” threat against Sarkozy’s life.
