Four Dead After Asian Star Bus Overturns Near Mvuma
Four people died and four others were injured after an Asian Star bus travelling from Masvingo to Harare collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz Atego truck along the Harare–Masvingo Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The fatal crash happened at around 1:30 am on 13 May 2026 at the 220km peg near Mvuma, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP). Police said the bus was carrying 60 passengers when the driver allegedly swerved into the opposite lane while trying to avoid hitting a pedestrian.
In a statement posted on X on 13 May 2026, police said the collision left four people dead on the spot, including the truck driver, two passengers travelling in the truck and the pedestrian.
Bus Overturns After Head-On Collision
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the accident occurred after the bus driver allegedly attempted to avoid a pedestrian who was on the road.
Police said:
“The ZRP reports a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 13/05/26 at approximately 0130 hours at the 220 km peg along the Harare–Masvingo Road.”
The police added:
“The driver of an Asian Star bus travelling from Masvingo to Harare with 60 passengers on board attempted to avoid hitting a pedestrian, encroached onto the oncoming lane and was involved in a head-on collision with a Mercedes-Benz Atego truck carrying two passengers.”
According to police, the force of the impact caused the bus to leave the road before overturning and landing on its side.
Four Die On The Spot
The collision proved fatal for the truck occupants and the pedestrian involved in the incident.
Police said:
“As a result of the impact, the bus veered off the road, overturned and landed on its side, while the truck subsequently struck the pedestrian.”
The statement continued:
“Four people died on the spot, the truck driver, two passengers in the truck and the pedestrian, while four passengers from the bus sustained injuries.”
The injured passengers were not immediately identified.
Authorities said the bodies of the deceased were taken to Mvuma Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Concerns Over Road Safety
The latest crash has once again drawn attention to fatal accidents occurring on Zimbabwe’s major highways, particularly along the busy Harare–Masvingo Road which carries large volumes of buses, haulage trucks and private vehicles daily.
Police have repeatedly urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during night travel and when approaching pedestrians along highways.
The identities of the deceased had not yet been released by authorities at the time of publication.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are continuing.
