Friends have rallied together to launch a public fundraiser to assist the family of Babongile Sikhonjwa with the logistics of his final journey. The initiative has been fully sanctioned by the Sikhonjwa family, who are preparing to lay the radio personality to rest this coming Saturday.
Sikhonjwa, affectionately known as Babo, passed away on September 21st at the age of 49. His legacy is a rich tapestry woven from his work as a dynamic radio host, a masterful MC, a comedian who brought joy to many, and a staunch cultural activist. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, the 26th of September, at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre, a fitting venue for a man who graced so many of its stages.

Thereafter, his body will be taken to his ancestral home in Mlowezi, Insiza District, ahead of the burial. Confirming the family’s support for the fundraiser, his sister, Babusisiwe Bathabile Moyo, stated,
“They notified us that they want to raise funds in honour of their friend, and as the family, we have given them the green light to do so.”

One of the fund’s organisers, Qhubani Moyo, elaborated that the effort was born from a desire to honour a friend whose influence knew no borders. He revealed that a GoFundMe page has been established for the international community, while local supporters can contribute via EcoCash or Mukuru to a number registered in his name.
Moyo was keen to frame the initiative within a deeply cultural context, explaining that it is a modern interpretation of a timeless practice.
“This is our own version of Zibuthe or Incebethu, traditional community initiatives where people come together to support a bereaved family,” he said. He emphasised that “all the money raised will be handed over directly to the Sikhonjwa family.”

Moyo was also quick to clarify that the fundraiser is not an indication of any financial hardship for the family. Instead, it is a heartfelt gesture from a global network of friends touched by Sikhonjwa’s life.
“The move was not motivated by financial difficulties on the family’s part, but rather, as a gesture of appreciation for Sikhonjwa’s life and the lasting friendships he nurtured,” Moyo affirmed.
