Government Raises Alarm Over Fake Overseas Jobs Luring Citizens Into War Zones

The government has issued a strong warning to Zimbabweans over dangerous recruitment schemes that are luring citizens into foreign conflict zones under false pretences.

Authorities say the scams, often disguised as legitimate job offers, have already resulted in multiple deaths and widespread exploitation.

Speaking at a press briefing in Harare, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Zhemu Soda said the situation goes beyond ordinary job fraud, describing it as a coordinated network linked to human trafficking.

False Promises Turn Deadly

Officials revealed that at least 15 Zimbabweans have lost their lives after being deceived into travelling abroad for what they believed were well-paying jobs.

According to the government, recruiters typically advertise opportunities in security, logistics, or private contracting. However, these promises often prove to be a trap, with victims finding themselves in dangerous and unfamiliar environments.

In many cases, the promised salaries never materialise, leaving individuals stranded and vulnerable.

Victims Forced Into Conflict

Authorities say victims are often stripped of their travel documents upon arrival and forced into roles far different from what they were promised. Instead of civilian work, many are reportedly coerced into active combat with little or no training.

The conditions are described as harsh and life-threatening, with some individuals subjected to forced labour or other forms of abuse. Families back home are frequently left in the dark, receiving little information about the fate of their loved ones.

Social Media Used as Recruitment Tool

The government has identified social media platforms as a key channel used by traffickers to target potential victims.

Minister Soda warned that these networks use convincing messaging and attractive offers to lure unsuspecting job seekers, particularly those seeking opportunities outside the country.

Government Moves to Repatriate Victims

Authorities say efforts are underway to bring back the remains of those who died abroad. The process involves complex diplomatic engagements and logistical arrangements.

Minister Soda added that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has directed government departments to urgently address the issue and strengthen measures to protect citizens from falling victim to such schemes.

Call for Vigilance

The government has urged Zimbabweans to exercise extreme caution when considering job offers from unknown foreign recruiters. Officials stressed the importance of verifying opportunities through official channels to avoid falling prey to exploitation networks.

Authorities say tackling the scam remains a priority, as efforts continue to dismantle the networks behind the operations and prevent further loss of life.
