Crime Unfolds While Employer Away

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the incident occurred in August 2025 while the victim had traveled to his farm in Darwendale. Matemarunda, employed as a housemaid, and a gardener, Milton Mudimu, were left in charge of the home.

The following day, the victim received a call from Matemarunda claiming the gardener had not reported for duty. Upon returning home on 12 August, the victim discovered bedroom doors wide open and a digital metal safe forcibly removed from the wall.

The safe contained a mix of currencies, including USD80,400, ZAR4,000, 300 Yuan, 200 Dirhams, 100 Rupees, and 30 Pounds.

Investigations Lead to Arrests

Police investigations traced the stolen safe to a parked car at the residence. Fingerprints on the safe linked it to the suspects. Mudimu was later intercepted while attempting to flee to South Africa, where he implicated Matemarunda as the mastermind.

Investigators revealed that Matemarunda had provided information about the cash and coordinated with two male accomplices, who remain at large, to remove the safe and distribute the stolen funds.

Following her arrest, authorities recovered cash hidden in her room, totaling USD1,239, ZAR1,360, 100 Yuan, 5 Dirhams, 50 Rupees, and GBP10.

Sentencing

Matemarunda was convicted by the Harare Magistrates’ Court and sentenced to 36 months imprisonment, with 2 months suspended, meaning she will serve 34 months in jail.

Public Reminder

The National Prosecuting Authority reminded citizens that violating the trust of employers carries serious consequences, emphasizing that the law will eventually catch up with those who commit criminal acts.

“Members of the public are reminded that the law will always catch up with those who engage in criminal acts and violating the trust of their employers,” NPAZ said.
