Harare Man Takes Own Life 18 Days After Paying Lobola In Dispute With Church Leaders
A 23-year-old man died by suicide 18 days after paying lobola for his wife, following a dispute with church leaders over when he could take her home.
Cain Mumba had completed the customary marriage formalities with Thelma Hliwayo on September 5 and reportedly expected to start living with her immediately afterwards.
However, church leaders allegedly told the couple that they could only live together and have sexual relations after their white wedding.
Cain Wanted To Take Wife Home
According to H-Metro, Mumba was unhappy with the decision and wanted to take Hliwayo to his home after the lobola ceremony.
He reportedly viewed the completion of the customary formalities as significant enough to begin their life together as husband and wife.
The disagreement with the church leaders left him bitter, according to his family.
As a result, in protest Mumba reportedly ingested rat poison.
Family Speaks On His Death
A family spokesperson identified only as Nyakabawu confirmed Mumba’s death and described him as a loving family member who had shown promise as a leader.
The spokesperson said Mumba had been particularly concerned that delaying the union until a white wedding could create problems in their relationship.
“We have been robbed of a loving man and promising leader of our family.
“Cain wanted to take his wife soon after paying lobola arguing that waiting for a white wedding would pave way for the devil.
“His church leaders denied him and he became bitter.
“We did not expect that it would end in this way.
“To him Roora Day was bigger than a white wedding and it affected him,” she said.
