Headlands Gardener Jailed for Kidnapping 8-Year-Old Boy

A 25-year-old gardener from Headlands has been jailed for kidnapping an 8-year-old boy, following a swift response from both a courageous community member and law enforcement.

Ernest Kapfurutsa of Plot 40, Wensleydale, was convicted by the Rusape Magistrates’ Court and handed an effective 12-month prison sentence.

Child Dragged Toward River

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) confirmed that the incident occurred on 11 October 2025 in Village 2, Nyamukamani, Chiendambuya.
The young complainant was walking home with a friend when Kapfurutsa confronted them.

He initially attempted to seize the other child but failed. He then grabbed the 8-year-old complainant by the arm and began forcefully dragging him toward the Nyagadzi River, clearly intending to deprive the minor of his freedom.

The child struggled to escape but could not break free.

Child’s Brave Cry for Help Saves Him

As they passed Nyamukamani gardens, the boy shouted for help from a woman who was tending her garden.

Her immediate reaction to investigate the commotion forced Kapfurutsa to abandon the child and flee the scene.
The matter was reported to the police shortly afterwards, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

Authorities Urge Vigilance

The NPAZ said the case underscores the vital role community members play in safeguarding children.

Parents and guardians have been encouraged to remind minors not to walk alone and to seek help from trusted adults if approached by strangers.

“This case highlights the importance of community vigilance. Parents and guardians are urged to caution children about walking home alone and to teach them to seek help from trusted adults immediately if approached by strangers.”
