Man Demands US$9,206 From Ex-Girlfriend After 6-Year Relationship Ends
A Makoni man has taken his former girlfriend to a community court, demanding US$9,206 (about R149,500) after their six-year relationship ended following her qualification as a teacher. Michael Mutero claims he helped fund Elizabeth Manando’s studies and living expenses, but she disputes that the money was a loan.

Mutero told Chief Makoni’s community court that he supported Manando while she studied at Belvedere Teachers’ College, including borrowing money when she reportedly faced unpaid fees.
“We were in a relationship for more than six years. I paid for her college fees at Belvedere Teachers’ College, and also helped her secure a place there.”
He claims Manando later secured a teaching post in Hwange in 2024 and their relationship subsequently ended. Mutero alleges she then began living with another man.
He says he wants repayment for education and rental expenses and claims he initially considered seeking as much as US$30,000 (about R487,000).
Ex-Girlfriend Disputes The Debt
Manando acknowledged receiving some financial assistance but said it was voluntary support during their relationship, not a loan.
“I never lived with him and he was never my husband. He was simply my boyfriend.”
She also disputed the amount allegedly owed, saying she acknowledged only US$500 (about R8,100) before a Commissioner of Oaths.
Chief Makoni said gifts exchanged during relationships are generally acts of love and are not automatically repayable.
“Lovers spoil each other during the course of a relationship. It is an act of love, and one should not expect repayment when the relationship ends.”
The chief ordered Mutero to produce the alleged debt acknowledgements and supporting documents before the matter proceeds further.
