Chicago Fire Seal R51 Million Deal for Orlando Pirates Defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi

Orlando Pirates are set to cash in big after agreeing to a massive R51-million transfer that will see rising defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi join Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire.

The 20-year-old has already travelled to the United States, where he is finalising the details of his move.

Low-Key Exit Sparks Transfer Confirmation

Mbokazi’s sudden appearance at OR Tambo International Airport earlier this week — where he attempted to keep a low profile — fuelled speculation that an international switch was close.

That speculation has now been confirmed with Chicago Fire winning the race for his signature.

Rapid Rise Attracts Global Attention

The young centre-back’s stock has been climbing rapidly since last season, when his performances under former Pirates coach Jose Riveiro turned him into one of the club’s most promising defenders.

His consistency and maturity at the back drew interest from several clubs abroad, but Chicago Fire ultimately tabled the winning offer.

Still Expected to Play for Pirates Before MLS Move

Mbokazi’s switch to the MLS will only become official after the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he is strongly tipped to earn a Bafana Bafana call-up from Hugo Broos.

Until then, he will remain available for Pirates’ fixtures, including the Carling Knockout final against Marumo Gallants on 6 December.

Another Major Transfer for Pirates

His move follows a growing trend of South African players heading to the MLS, joining the likes of Olwethu Makhanya, Bongokuhle Hlongwane, and Njabulo Blom.

Orlando Pirates also continue their impressive run of high-value transfers, coming just months after winger Mohau Nkota completed a lucrative move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq.
