Former Highlanders star Gabriel Nyoni has revealed how his first car became an expensive lesson. Nyoni earned the money after starring in the Mbada Diamonds Cup. He scored the tournament’s fastest goal and finished as the competition’s top scorer.
However, what happened to his bonus remains one of his most memorable stories. At the time, Nyoni was studying at NUST while playing professional football. Moving between lectures and training sessions was becoming increasingly difficult.
Therefore, he decided to use his bonus to buy his first car.
Unfortunately, Nyoni admitted he knew very little about vehicles. A trusted woman introduced him to a man selling a 2000 Nissan Sunny in Mpopoma.
He inspected the car and thought everything looked fine. The vehicle started, and Nyoni even drove it around before completing the purchase. However, his excitement quickly turned into frustration.
The Nissan Sunny became a nightmare
The following morning, the Nissan Sunny refused to start. That moment marked the beginning of what Nyoni described as a nightmare. He repeatedly took the vehicle to mechanics, hoping each repair would solve the problems.
Instead, another fault seemed to appear whenever one problem was fixed.
Eventually, Nyoni became so familiar with mechanics that he knew their phone numbers almost by heart. He also tried returning the vehicle to the seller.
However, the seller refused to take the car back.
After spending considerable time, money and energy, Nyoni finally gave the Nissan Sunny away for free.
Looking back, though, the former Highlanders star does not regret the experience.
Instead, he believes the car taught him an important lesson about money.
Nyoni admitted that excitement influenced his decision because he lacked financial education.
He now advises young footballers and anyone receiving their first significant income to slow down.
“Before you spend your money, learn about what you’re buying,” Nyoni said.
Ultimately, his Nissan Sunny became much more than a troublesome first car.
It became a reminder that financial decisions require knowledge, patience and careful consideration.
