Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz believes technology could help prevent more controversial decisions in the Premier Soccer League.
The Frenchman renewed his call for VAR after Chiefs surrendered points against Polokwane City on Saturday.
Amakhosi settled for a 1-1 draw at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium. The result also pushed Chiefs down to fourth place.
However, Da Cruz believes refereeing decisions have played a role in Chiefs losing valuable points this season.
Chiefs coach highlights disputed decisions
Chiefs fitness trainer Julien Le Heran translated Da Cruz’s post-match comments. The coach pointed to several incidents involving his team.
Da Cruz believes VAR could give referees better support during important moments. He also wants the technology to improve standards across the league.
“He says also just to finish, also to develop the PSL, to help our referees, we need to set up the VAR,” Da Cruz said.
He then highlighted three decisions that frustrated Chiefs during recent matches.
“He says because against Richards Bay, one offside, there was no offside and then we could score goals. Against Siwelele, the goal of [Wandile] Duba was a goal and today there was a penalty.”
Da Cruz sees VAR as a long-term solution
Despite his frustration, Da Cruz accepts that VAR will not always favour Chiefs.
Instead, he believes officials should have better tools when making crucial decisions. He also considers VAR an investment in the PSL’s future.
“So, he says if we want to continue to develop the championship, we need to set up the VAR to help our referees.
“Sometimes it can be against us, but for three games it can be with us,” he added through his translator.
Meanwhile, Chiefs remain firmly involved in the race near the top of the Betway Premiership.
Da Cruz has suffered only one defeat since taking charge of Amakhosi. Now, he will want his players to turn their strong start into a serious title challenge.
Chiefs will next shift their attention towards the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round.
