The 36-year-old attacker left Kaizer Chiefs for rivals Mamelodi Sundowns in 2017. The move shocked Chiefs supporters and disappointed club management. However, his switch to Chloorkop failed to deliver success. Lebese made only 10 appearances across two seasons at Sundowns.
As a result, the club loaned him to SuperSport United in 2019.
Later, Lebese moved to Colorado Springs Switchbacks in 2020. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic cut his American adventure short.
After returning home, he struggled to find a club. Eventually, he retired from professional football.
Frustration Led to SuperSport Loan
Speaking on Josta Dladla’s podcast Izinja Ze Game, Lebese explained his frustration. “It was during my frustration at that point,” Lebese explained how he left Sundowns on loan. “I kept on calling my agent every day and I was like ‘find me something, i’m not going to play’.”
He said his agent contacted SuperSport United through Stan Matthews. “They called SuperSport and asked if they can take me on loan.”
“But mind you, that loan also…my mind was messed up, man.”
Regret and Hopes of Returning to Chiefs
Lebese admitted he struggled mentally after leaving Kaizer Chiefs. “I spent six months on loan and I was never the same.” “I kept asking myself a lot of things because I couldn’t let Chiefs go.” “Wherever I went, it was like eishh jo [why did I leave Chiefs].”
He hoped to return to Naturena after his Sundowns spell. “I wanted to leave because I had an idea that I wanted to go back.”
“I wanted to become a free agent because I thought maybe this was an opportunity.” “Remember, after I left, I apologised to Bobby.”
However, a Chiefs return never materialised. His United States move promised financial rewards. Sadly, the pandemic ended his overseas ambitions early.
