New Year Reminder: No Grace Period For Expired Car Licences
As we move into the new year, Zimbabwean motorists are urged to heed a crucial and timely reminder. The widely believed 7-day grace period for renewing vehicle licences is a complete myth. The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) has officially stated that driving with an expired licence, even for a single day, exposes motorists to immediate enforcement action by law enforcement. This essential explainer revisits the clarifications made by ZINARA in an internal memo from October 2025, a vital alert for all drivers as renewals come due.
The Law Is Clear And Offers No New Year Leniency
This reminder serves to shatter a persistent assumption as drivers consider their vehicle compliance for the year ahead. ZINARA has confirmed its operations are strictly bound by the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act, which provides no allowance for a grace period at any time, including the start of a new year.
The authority’s memo stated:
“ZINARA does not offer a 7-day grace period for vehicle licensing. Our operations are in accordance with Part IV to the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act [Chapter 13:14], and in terms of this legislation no such grace period is provided for.”
This means a vehicle becomes non-compliant the very first day after its licence disc expires. Police can take action immediately, regardless of the time of year.
How Penalties Work And Your Key Renewal Dates
With many licence discs expiring at year-end, understanding the penalty timeline is essential. While police can act from day one, ZINARA’s own financial penalties follow a specific schedule.
The authority explained:
“Penalties for failure to renew vehicle licences start to accrue 30 calendar days after the expiry date. During this period, the vehicle is categorised as non-compliant and will be liable for any arrest or detention by law enforcement agents.”
To ensure a smooth start to the year and avoid any risk, ZINARA advises proactive renewal. The notice reminded motorists:
“Renewal can be done within 60 days prior to the date of expiry (ie two months before expiry) to avoid penalties.”
Easy Steps To Renew Your Licence For The Year Ahead
ZINARA has multiple channels for hassle-free renewal, helping drivers begin the new year compliantly. These include ZINARA licensing offices, selected tollgates, and registered licensing agents nationwide. The authority also promotes digital renewals via its online platform and accredited agents, offering a convenient solution for busy motorists.
