Jonathan Moyo Death Claims Rock Social Media As Fresh Denial Emerges
Rumours that former Zimbabwean Information Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo had died spread rapidly on Thursday, 27 August 2026, before two journalists who were appointed newspaper editors during his tenure publicly rejected the claims.
The rumours gained traction after a social media account posted that Moyo was dead and offered condolences. The post attracted more than 90,000 views.
However, former Sunday Mail editor Edmund Kudzayi pushed back against the claims, writing on X:
“His death is greatly exaggerated.”
When asked whether the rumours had any truth to them, Kudzayi responded:
“None!”

Jonathan Moyo Death Claims Spark Social Media Frenzy
Zimlive and former Chronicle editor Mduduzi Mathuthu also disputed the report.
Mathuthu wrote that the post claiming Moyo had died had attracted more than 55,000 views (at the time he posted), but added that “it’s not true”.
Kudzayi and Mathuthu are not strangers to Moyo’s media history. In 2014, Kudzayi was appointed editor of The Sunday Mail by Moyo, then Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services. Mathuthu was appointed editor of The Chronicle during the same period. Contemporary reporting described the two appointments as part of Moyo’s changes at state-owned Zimpapers.

The conflicting posts have left social media users debating the claims, particularly after the original report attracted significant attention.
The available statements from Kudzayi and Mathuthu therefore contradict the viral death claim.
