King Mswati Bodyguard Shoots Himself During 40-Year Throne Celebration In Front Of SADC Leaders
A royal bodyguard assigned to protect King Mswati allegedly shot himself dead in front of visiting SADC Heads of State during the monarch’s 40-year throne celebrations, in an incident reported on April 27, 2026.
The shocking incident unfolded in Ezulwini at the Royal Villas, where regional leaders had gathered for the high-profile event marking four decades of the King’s rule. The deceased has been identified as Lieutenant Colani Mdluli, a member of the royal security detail.
Shock Incident At High-Profile Celebration
According to the Swaziland News, the incident reportedly occurred around 11 am, just hours before a major Culture Day event scheduled at Ludzidzini Palace.
Sources quoted by the publication described a sudden and disturbing scene involving the officer, who was part of a specialised security unit tasked with protecting both the King and visiting dignitaries.
“Lieutenant Colani Mdluli… was tasked with providing security to visiting Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State,” the publication reported.
The report further states that the officer allegedly turned the weapon on himself in full view of those present.
The event had drawn several prominent regional figures, including King Letsie III of Lesotho, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, former South African President Jacob Zuma, and former Botswana leader Ian Khama. Other leaders, including President Emmerson Mnangagwa, were also in Eswatini for related celebrations.

Family Speaks On Alleged Motive
While official confirmation remains limited, individuals close to the family reportedly shared insights into the officer’s state of mind.
“We don’t know the specific reason why he killed himself but, he was complaining about low salaries,” a close family member was quoted as saying.
The publication further noted that Lieutenant Mdluli was the son of the late Boy Mdluli, described as a trusted figure within royal circles.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, military authorities have remained tight-lipped.
“Army Spokesperson Major Sandile Gwebu declined to comment,” the publication stated.
Security Tightened As Questions Mount
The officer was part of a broader “Security Task Team” formed ahead of the celebrations, aimed at ensuring the safety of both the monarch and high-ranking guests.
The weekend’s events formed part of a wider programme celebrating the King’s 40 years on the throne, with ceremonies held at multiple venues, including Somhlolo National Stadium.
The reported incident has raised questions about conditions within the security services, particularly in relation to welfare concerns raised by those close to the deceased.
At the time of publication, no official statement had been issued confirming the full circumstances surrounding the death. Authorities are yet to provide a detailed account of what transpired.
