Kwekwe Inmate Recaptured After Escaping Under the Pretext of Relieving Himself in Bush
An inmate was recaptured after attempting to escape from Kwekwe Prisons by pretending he needed to use the toilet.
His plan was short-lived as he was caught the same day at a busy roundabout while trying to flee to Zhombe.
Inmate Disappears After Asking to Relieve Himself
On 4 August, 40-year-old John Nyika was assigned to fetch firewood along Chiundura Road. He asked officers to allow him to “relieve himself” in the bush, but instead vanished, sparking a frantic manhunt by the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS).
Manhunt Ends With Nyika’s Arrest at Roundabout
Nyika’s brief freedom came to an end hours later. At around 8:34pm, the ZPCS Prisons Intelligence team tracked him down at Senderai Roundabout, where he was desperately trying to catch transport to his rural home in Zhombe.
“He was promptly escorted back to Kwekwe Prisons,” confirmed the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).
Failed Escape Adds Extra Jail Time for Nyika
What he thought was a clever excuse ended with him being dragged back to prison and slapped with extra jail time.
Nyika appeared before the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court, where he was handed a seven-month sentence for the failed escape.
Three months were suspended on condition of good behaviour, leaving him with four months to serve in addition to the 24 months he was already serving for unlawful entry.

Prison Escape Attempt in Gwanda
In a separate case, an inmate serving a three-year sentence for stock theft in Gwanda was recaptured after attempting to escape custody.
Nkosilathi Lunga made his move on 28 July around midday while on a firewood collection assignment at Mapane Prison Farm. When the group was left unattended, he slipped away and made his way to his rural home in Kezi.
His freedom was short-lived. Prison officers tracked him down at a place known as Dry Paddock in Kezi, where he was swiftly arrested and taken back to Gwanda Prison.
Lunga was handed an additional six-month sentence, with two months suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
