Traditional Leaders Set October Date For Lake Kariba Cleansing
Preparations are underway for a traditional cleansing ceremony at Lake Kariba following the ferry disaster that claimed at least 97 lives on 11 August 2026. Traditional leaders say the rites will be held in October, with beer already being brewed for the ceremony.
Traditional Leaders Prepare Lake Kariba Ceremony
Chief Mola, born Champion Rare, said traditional leaders had received approval from government officials to proceed with the ceremony.
He said the rites would begin at Chalala before moving to Kariba town for an overnight ceremony.
Chief Mola explained:
“The traditional beer for the ceremony is being brewed. We are engaging the District Development Coordinator’s office to ensure that on that day there will be no boats on the lake so that the process can be conducted peacefully and without lights on the lake.”
He is expected to lead the ceremony alongside Chief Nebiri and other traditional leaders.
Mbuya Nehanda Disaster Still Impacts Communities
The ceremony follows the 11 August capsizing of the RIDA-operated Mbuya Nehanda ferry while travelling from Kariba to Chalala.
The vessel reportedly had about 180 passengers and goods on board, despite having a stated capacity of 90. Strong waves struck the ferry near Long Island.
At least 97 people died, including 18 children. President Emmerson Mnangagwa subsequently declared a State of Disaster and an inquest was launched.
The disaster has also disrupted transport for fishing communities, traders and businesses dependent on the route.
New Ferry Service Delayed
A planned passenger service by Silverstone Ferry, owned by Most High Ferries, has been delayed.
The service was intended to connect Kariba town with remote fishing communities and island villages, but will reportedly only begin after the traditional rites.
The October ceremony is therefore expected to mark another significant moment for communities affected by the tragedy.
