Man Arrested After Killing Church Mate During A Service

A man has been arrested after he killed his churchmate with a log during a service. Parishioners of a local Zion Christian Church (ZCC) congregation are struggling to comprehend a brutal act that resulted in the death of one of their own, Emmanuel Shanganai, aged 23.

The alleged perpetrator, his 33-year-old neighbour Sam Togara, is now in police custody, accused of committing the unthinkable during a service on the 9th of November, 2025. What began as a day of worship descended into chaos, leaving a young man dead and a village searching for answers.

The precise root of their disagreement remains unclear to fellow church members, but its consequences were devastatingly final. Witnesses state that in a sudden and furious motion, Togara is alleged to have seized a heavy piece of timber and struck Shanganai with tremendous force.

The violent act caused the young man to collapse immediately, bringing all hymns and prayers to an abrupt and stunned halt. The emergency services were summoned, but their arrival was too late; Emmanuel Shanganai was pronounced dead, and his body was subsequently transported to Ndanga Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The Masvingo police, confirmed the distressing event and the subsequent arrest. Police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa provided a formal statement on the matter.

“We have arrested Sam Togara who is suspected of killing Emmanuel Shanganai during a church service. He is assisting with investigations,” said Insp Dhewa.

Moving beyond the facts of the case, the Inspector issued a stern and heartfelt appeal to the public, condemning the use of violence to resolve personal disputes. He emphasised the importance of seeking mediation and professional help, urging communities to uphold the sanctity of peaceful gatherings.

“We urge members of the public to stop solving their problems through violence and to seek help from a third party. Do not turn prayer meetings into boxing matches,” he added.

This plea resonates deeply in a community now forced to mourn a life lost in a place meant for solace and salvation.
