Mnangagwa Gifts Retired Chief Justice Luke Malaba Tractor, Truck And Farming Equipment

Luke Malaba Receives Agricultural Package From Mnangagwa After Retirement

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has gifted retired Chief Justice Luke Malaba a tractor, truck and other farming equipment as he begins life after the judiciary.

The presentation took place at the State House on 6 June 2026, weeks after Malaba stepped down from Zimbabwe’s highest judicial office. President Mnangagwa said the agricultural mechanisation package was meant to recognise Malaba’s decades of service and assist him as he transitions into retirement.

Mnangagwa Praises Malaba’s Service

Sharing details of the meeting, President Mnangagwa said he was pleased to welcome the former Chief Justice to State House and honour his contribution to the country.

The President said:

“It was my pleasure to welcome the recently retired Chief Justice, Luke Malaba, to State House today.”

He said the package was presented in recognition of Malaba’s commitment and leadership within the judiciary.

“In recognition of his outstanding service spanning decades, unwavering commitment, and exemplary legal leadership within the Zimbabwean judiciary, I presented him with an agricultural mechanisation package to facilitate his transition into post-retirement life.”

According to Mnangagwa, the package includes a tractor, a Nissan UD truck, a boom sprayer and a planter.

He added:

“The package comprises a tractor, a Nissan UD truck, a boom sprayer, and a planter to facilitate his agricultural pursuits.”

The President also encouraged Malaba to continue contributing to national development through farming.

“As he retires from the judiciary, I encourage him to leverage his vast expertise in the agricultural sector. Our land is a vital asset, and productivity must persist at all levels.”

End Of A Long Judicial Career

Malaba retired in May 2026 after more than 40 years in the legal profession.

A special sitting of the Constitutional Court held on 14 May 2026 marked the end of his tenure as Chief Justice. During the ceremony, Deputy Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza paid tribute to his contribution to the country’s justice system.

Gwaunza said:

“Your legacy is not confined to the judgements you have written or the offices you have held. It lives in the systems you have built, the standards you have set and the people you have inspired.”

Malaba served as a magistrate, High Court judge, Supreme Court judge, Deputy Chief Justice and eventually Chief Justice.

Retirement Opens New Chapter

During the farewell proceedings, judicial leaders noted that Malaba had a long-standing interest in ranching and agriculture.

The farming equipment presented by Mnangagwa appears set to support those interests as the former Chief Justice embarks on a new chapter away from the courtroom.

His retirement has also ushered in a leadership transition within the judiciary, with Elizabeth Gwaunza becoming Zimbabwe’s first female Chief Justice.
