‘Money is not everything’: Gwekwerere Warn PSL Players

Zimbabwean football legend and former striker Evans Gwekwerere has issued a stern warning to local players. He urges them to prioritise discipline instead of chasing money. Moreover, he cautions them to avoid substance abuse at all costs.

Money obsession and rising drug abuse

Gwekwerere explains that many players now focus too much on financial gain. As a result, this obsession is fueling increased drug abuse.
He believes this trend is destroying promising football careers.

“In this age, people think money is everything,” he said. “If they don’t have it, they start doing drugs, which is not good. Most of the players are killing their careers because of that abuse. I am advising the players in the PSL not to touch those substances. They shorten your career and even your life span.”

Community efforts to guide young players

Meanwhile, Gwekwerere remains active in community development initiatives. He works with Norton Boys, a club he founded.

Through this platform, he campaigns against drug abuse among young athletes. Additionally, he mentors players to make better life choices.
