Morgan Gould Urges Kaizer Chiefs to Aim for 2029 FIFA Club World Cup Qualification
Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Morgan Gould believes the Soweto giants have a golden opportunity to rebuild and position themselves among Africa’s elite clubs — and ultimately qualify for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.
Chance to Reclaim Continental Glory
Kaizer Chiefs watched from the sidelines as Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Ahly, Esperance, and Wydad Athletic Club represented Africa at the upcoming 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
Each participating club is set to pocket at least $10 million (R173 million) in appearance fees, in addition to the massive global exposure that comes with competing on the world stage.
Gould said Chiefs should be motivated by these rewards to once again become a continental powerhouse.
“It’s always good to go into continental competitions, it just gives you a lot of pedigree.
It tests your flexibility not just on the football side but from the social side. Chiefs being a big team, economically it makes sense for them because they’ll just be selling more units,” Gould said.
CAF Success Key to Club World Cup Qualification
The veteran defender highlighted that qualifying for the FIFA Club World Cup is no easy feat. Clubs must perform consistently in the CAF Champions League over several seasons to accumulate enough ranking points.
“When it comes to the club’s ambitions to play in bigger tournaments such as the Club World Cup, CAF is the type of tournament that they need to compete in,” Gould said.
‘A Step in the Right Direction’
Gould expressed delight that Chiefs have reached the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, saying this marks a significant step toward rebuilding their continental reputation.
“The club obviously has a mission to go and play the next Club World Cup and a couple of Club World Cups after that.
“This is how you start — you go to your semi-final of your Champions League, reach the final of the CAF Confederation Cup. Those are the types of things that you need,” he added.
He acknowledged that the road ahead will not be easy but remains optimistic about Chiefs’ potential.
“It’s still a journey that’s obviously going to be testing, but it’s a journey that I think is not impossible to get to the land of milk and honey.”
Kaizer Chiefs Face Long Road to Africa’s Top Four
Kaizer Chiefs’ last notable continental run was reaching the 2021 CAF Champions League final, but they have struggled since then. Their current return to continental football presents a crucial opportunity to rebuild their ranking and reputation.
The Glamour Boys are currently among the lowest-ranked clubs in Africa, meaning they must achieve consistent success to break into the top four and stand a chance of representing Africa at the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.
