Mutare Woman Jailed Two Years For Defrauding Dollar Pantry Of US$16,241
A 25-year-old woman has been sentenced to an effective two years in prison after defrauding her employer, Dollar Pantry, of US$16,241.05 by manipulating daily cash sales records.
Michellene Muzenda, who worked as a supervisor at the Mutare business, was convicted by the Mutare Magistrates’ Court after investigations exposed discrepancies between the cash sales figures she recorded and the amounts reflected in the business’s automated teller machine records.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) confirmed the conviction and sentence, warning that employees who engage in fraud and theft will face prosecution.

How The US$16,241 Fraud Was Uncovered
The offences occurred between November 5, 2025, and March 17, 2026, during which Muzenda falsified daily cash sales figures in the company’s cash book.
Instead of recording the actual sales, she entered figures that did not correspond with the amounts reflected in the automated teller machine records, resulting in a financial loss of US$16,241.05.
The fraud was discovered on March 17, 2026, when the employer instructed supervisors to reconcile daily cash sales recorded in the books with the corresponding automated teller machine records.
The exercise revealed irregularities, prompting further investigations into the missing funds.
A forensic audit was subsequently conducted, covering cash discrepancies at the company’s Central Business District (CBD) premises and Branch B between November 2025 and March 2026. The audit established that Muzenda had manipulated the sales records.
Police Recover Cash And Goods Bought With Fraud Proceeds
Investigations led to the recovery of US$700 in cash from Muzenda.
Police also recovered various goods from her shop at Tinmark Mall in Mutare, which had been purchased using money obtained through the fraudulent scheme.
The recoveries formed part of the investigations into the US$16,241.05 that the business had lost.
Court Hands Down Effective Two-Year Jail Term
Muzenda was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment.
However, the court suspended two years of the sentence for five years on condition of good behaviour. Another two years were suspended on condition that she restitutes the money.
This left her with an effective prison term of two years.
The NPAZ welcomed the conviction and sentencing, saying the outcome demonstrated that fraud and theft committed by employees would not be tolerated.
The authority also reminded members of the public that individuals involved in fraudulent activities would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
