RBZ Makes Major Promise About US Dollar Savings As Zimbabwe Plans Single-Currency Shift
Zimbabwe’s central bank has assured the public that US dollar savings and existing foreign currency contracts will remain protected as the country prepares for a possible transition to a single-currency system. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) says the move will not force account holders to surrender their hard currency or have their savings converted into another denomination.
The assurance was delivered by RBZ Deputy Governor Innocent Matshe at the 2027 pre-budget seminar in Bulawayo on Wednesday, 28 October 2026. He was representing central bank governor John Mushayavanhu.
RBZ Assures Zimbabweans Over US Dollar Savings
Matshe said foreign currency deposits and financial agreements would continue to be honoured in the currencies in which they were originally held.
He told delegates:
“May I reiterate that the mono-currency shift will not touch on people’s savings and other financial contracts in hard currency.”
He added:
“Those will be honoured in their original currency. People will be able to keep their hard currency.”
The statement addresses concerns about what could happen to US dollar accounts if Zimbabwe eventually moves towards using one domestic currency.
When Will Zimbabwe Introduce A Single Currency?
Matshe said the transition would not be driven by an arbitrary deadline. Instead, authorities would consider prevailing market conditions and economic indicators, including macroeconomic stability.
The central bank also projects that the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) will not depreciate by more than 5%, although the statement does not establish that this outcome is guaranteed.
The assurances come as Zimbabwe considers the conditions necessary for a mono-currency framework.
